TOP OF SALZBURG

Salzburg’s highest-situated attraction at 3,029 m

The high-alpine adventure world is open year-round and directly borders the Hohe Tauern National Park, Alps’ largest nature reserve. Visiting TOP OF SALZBURG does not require any mountaineering skills, for cable cars take visitors comfortably from the valley all the way up. That makes TOP OF SALZBURG the highest point in the Salzburger Land to be reachable by cable cars. Two spectacular panoramic platforms, a mystical info tunnel and Austria’s highest-situated movie theater provide breathtaking views of and fascinating insights into the high-alpine mountain world.

Highlights

  • Panoramic platforms
The view from the panoramic platforms TOP OF SALBURG and National Park Gallery is stunning – from the glaciated flanks of the National Park's threethousanders over the rugged cirques of the Steinernes Meer ("Rocky Sea") and the Kitzbuehel Alps all the way down to the Zell valley.
The panoramic platform TOP OF SALZBURG is accessible via the summit station. Overview boards and special telescopes inform visitors about the surrounding mountain world. The photo point captures the memorable WOW moment.
The panoramic platform National Park Gallery is reachable via the 360-m-long same-named info tunnel. The platform protrudes from Kitzsteinhorn’s southern flank directly into the untouched mountain world of the Hohe Tauern National Park. To the south, the summit of the Grossglockner can be seen – Austria's highest mountain. In July and August, the secured Panorama Trail leads down from the platform to the ICE ARENA – a unique snow adventure area on the glacier plateau.
  • National Park Gallery
With every step through the mystical, 360-m-long tunnel, you feel the glacier’s heartbeat. Six info stations inform visitors about crystal treasures, permafrost, technology, geography and much more. The tunnel leads directly onto the same-named panoramic platforms that gives a spectacular view. On the free National Park Gallery Tour, a National Park ranger guides visitors through the tunnel.
  • Cinema 3000
Austria’s highest-situated movie theater presents the film Kitzsteinhorn – THE NATURE. Stunning footage shows Kitzsteinhorn’s unique adventure, plant and animal world.
  • ICE ARENA
Snow sliding, snowball fights and building snowmen in July and August? At the ICE ARENA on the glacier plateau at 3,000 meters, this dream comes true, for here, there’s plenty of snow even in summer – providing fun and cooling. Slides are available for free on-site. After the ride down, a magic carpet conveniently takes both young and old back to the starting point. The ICE ARENA Snack Bar at the foot of the slope offers snacks and refreshments as well as loungers on the snow beach for sunbathing and relaxing.

Guided National Park Ranger Tours

On the Kitzsteinhorn Explorer Tour, a National Park ranger takes participants on an expedition through four climate zones – via panoramic cable car rides and short exploration hikes, from the temperate zone in Kaprun via the taiga and tundra, all the way up to the arctic glacier ice. The way holds exciting stories and fascinating insights into the flora and fauna of the Kitzsteinhorn, as well as one extraordinary highlight: the ride on the 3K K-onnection – one of world’s most modern and energy-efficient cable cars. Special explorer cabins provide an unobstructed 360° view of the impressive high-alpine landscape, all the way down the Zell basin.

The subsequent National Park Gallery Tour leads into the heart of the mountain. With every step through the mystical, 360-m-long National Park Gallery, you feel the glacier’s heartbeat. At six info stations, the ranger gives fascinating insights into the history, technology, natural treasures, flora and fauna of the Kitzsteinhorn. At the end of the tunnel, a breathtaking highlight awaits you: The same-named panorama platform gives a spectacular view into the untouched mountain world of the Hohe Tauern National Park. To the south, you can even see the summit of the Grossglockner – Austria’s highest mountain.
