FREERIDE XXL

FĂĽnf liftnahe Routen inkl. umfassendem Infosystem
The Kitzsteinhorn ranks among Austria’s most popular freeride spots and has long been world-famous in the scene: the legendary X OVER RIDE has been held on the Lakarschneid competition face for years – since 2024 even as 4* Freeride World Tour Challenger event.
From the highest access point at 2,900 meters, routes run downhill over a total of 2,450 vertical meters. The high-alpine location provides the ski resort with snow security and therefore best "powder" conditions. A comprehensive information system, consisting of a "Freeride INFO BASE" at the Alpincenter and an "INFO POINT" at each route access point, informs of everything worth knowing about safe backcountry riding.
Those who want to dive in the world of freeriding for the first time or aim to fine-tune their existing skills, participate in the “Freeride Monday”: freeride pros offer special “Start-up Workshops” for beginners and "Advanced Workshops" for experienced riders from December through April.

Freeride routes

On the Kitzsteinhorn, the world off the wide glacier slopes boasts one thing above all: variety. The five freeride routes run close to the lifts and impress with diverse terrain.

  • X1 ICE AGE
The 2-km-long route runs below the Gipfelbahn, through the entire cirque. A steep slope is followed by a flatter section before another steep run that merges into Piste 2.
  • X2 WEST SIDE STORY
After starting the with 2.8 km longest and most western situated route on the Kitzsteinhorn, especially snowboarders need great momentum for the high crossing to reach the backcountry, where a vast, snow-covered terrain awaits.
  • X3 LEFT WING
After the first steep run on this 1.8-km-long route, special attention has to be taken when crossing the regular slope, before diving into powder paradise again.
  • X4 JUMP RUN
This 1.3-km-long route features numerous cliffs, natural kickers and pipes, which makes it the locals’ most popular route and guarantees terrific fun.
  • X5 PIPE LINE
With 1 km, this route might be short, but she’s definitely quite something – the bumpy terrain calls for balance and thigh muscles.

"Safety first"

The marked freeride routes on the Kitzsteinhorn may be avalanche-secured, but they are neither groomed nor controlled. Therefore, everyone who moves outside the safe slope area has to equip themselves with appropriate ski or snowboard and safety gear and familiarize themselves with the code of conduct for backcountry riding. The "Freeride INFO BASE" at the Alpincenter shows just that as well as an overview of all freeride routes, features an avalanche transceiver checkpoint and displays the current avalanche danger scale. All route access points have a "Freeride INFO POINT" with details on the respective route’s characteristics and tips on safe backcountry riding.
